What is

Kathabhinaya?

Gemini_Generated_Image_qw8pvoqw8pvoqw8p.png

Kathābhinaya is my evolving practice of embodied storytelling. It draws from Indian narrative traditions, abhinaya, gesture, song, philosophical reflection, humour, devotional memory, and contemporary theatre. In Kathābhinaya, the performer is not merely a narrator, S/he becomes a narrator, actor, commentator, witness, ritual agent, emotional conductor, and sometimes even the conduit or space through which the story breathes.

Kathābhinaya evolved through time and forms like Kathā Koli, Ākāśa , i-Logy, Kathāuṣadhi to Kathāvṛkṣa. Kathā Koli has explored the idea of story as seed: small, intimate, local, and capable of germinating into collective meaning. Akāśa has engaged with space, resonance, silence, breath, and metaphysical presence. i-Logy has investigated the modern fragmented self, the digital “I,” and the performative crisis of iderntity. Kathāvṛkṣa looks at stories as medicine.  At present we've entered the world of forests and trees and are learning from the arborial wisdom.
